I’ve noticed that ableists have either no compassion or no direct experience with someone with a disability and because of that there is no convincing such a person of the difficulties the disabled face because of that.
They only see things through their eyes. Through their experiences.
They’ll always see a wheelchair or scooter at Disneyland as something that solves all “can’t wait in line” problems. They see those devices as giving THEM rest from standing so why shouldn’t it do the same for us?
Because we are more complex than a simple need to just sit and feel better and the issue is more complex than a standing issue.
We are not magical beings and those are not magical devices. They do not magically remove all the things that make it difficult to manage a line for us.
They do not see inside us. To see the neurological issues, endocrin issues, vascular issues, and any other of a number of internal issues a human can have. The outside presents as normal and that is all they see.
It has a lot to do with how someone who is disabled is presented in the mainstream media and entertainment outlets. We are seen as needing to be physically deformed or requiring a wheelchair 100% of the time.
Without those things, we can’t possibly be disabled, can we?
