Grief over the past's memories
Watching people meltdown over WDW's Carousel of Progress changes announcement got me thinking about the things I wish I could go visit that remained the same...
One favorite place is my Aunt & Uncle's home in Nuevo. I grew up loving that home. It was were the family met to celebrate the holidays. Christmas and Easter always included a drive out to see them with an occasional overnight stay. I took pictures of it on the last day we went to visit it before they sold itš. That's the one attached. I took that shot specifically that way as I knew it would remain in my dreams from then on.
I think I spent summers there too from time to time. I know that since my parents worked they would send me off to various relatives for summer and other school breaks. I have memories from another aunt and uncle up in Washington state where my cousin terrorized me (the city girl) as she was a wise country girl at the time. I remember my grandparents' various homes (hard to keep a general contractor in one homeš).
The first home I remember was called the "Denny house" and I have a special memory of being left out on the porch one night...screened in with the tv...because I fell asleep under the cushions of the couch. I woke up the following morning surprised I couldn't get back in the house, so I walked all the way to the back door and banged on it. My grandfather was surprised to find me thereš. Guess I was super skinny and small back then.
I understand the grief of losing one's history and safe places. I know that most of the anger over the announced changes reflect that grief. It's hard to let go of things you hold dear that have generations of memories attached to them.
My Carousel of Progress changed decades before WDW's. We got patriotic birds who then vanished and turned up as stripped down space robots. Change is constant unfortunately. I hope the new changes at the WDW attraction becomes loved by the new generations visiting it like the old one did.
What I wouldn't give for one more game of Uno that lasts past midnight with my cheatingšĀ grandparents and rowdy and fun familyš„¹.
